About Us
The congregations which precede Our Savior’s were: Immanuel Lutheran at Farming Township; Ebenezer Evangelical at Albany; St John’s Lutheran at Krain Township; Holy Trinity Lutheran at Holdingford; and Christ Lutheran at Albany.
In 1873, the congregation at Immanuel was organized. Members built their first log church in 1885; and in 1902, they dedicated their new church. They have continued worship there, celebrating their centennial in 1973. At about the same time settling took place in the community of Albany, seven families founded Ebenezer Evangelical Church in 1889. In 1892, they dedicated their new church and in 1893, they became part of the German Evangelical Synod of North America. This congregation affiliated with the American Lutheran Church in 1944. During the same period, around 1887, as settlers were locating in Farming and Albany, several families from St. John’s Church in St. Paul settled in Krain Township, north of Albany. They were joined by others from Chaska and in 1890, together formed St. John’s Lutheran. They requested to be part of Immanuel parish and to be served by the same pastor.
In the early 1940’s St. John’s Lutheran had their own pastor until 1945, when the previous arrangement was renewed. Weakened by declining membership, the congregation dissolved. Some joined Mt. Olivet in Upsala, while others went to Immanuel, seeking to build a new church in Albany. In 1941, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church was founded by eight families in the Holdingford area; a pastor was also installed. The church began with over 100 members, but membership declined rapidly. From 1949-1955, the pastor of Ebenezer Lutheran served both of the parishes. In 1955, services at Holy Trinity were discontinued. The remaining members agreed to join Ebenezer with the agreement that three services a year be held at Holy Trinity in Holdingford. A new congregation – Christ Lutheran – was founded by some former members of Immanuel and St. John’s.
In 1957, they began building a new church, dedicating it in 1958. In 1958, a new education addition was also being built onto the Ebenezer Church. From 1957-67, Christ Lutheran and Immanuel shared a pastor. In 1966, a new parsonage was built. In 1967, Ebenezer Lutheran and Christ Lutheran merged to form Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. For six years following the merger, Our Savior’s remained an independent congregation, without any synodical affiliation. In 1973, the congregation voted to affiliate with the American Lutheran part of the ALC until 1987. In early 1987, the congregation voted to become part of the newly-formed Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
